PRESIDENT GONE ROUGE

JOHANNESBURG - Barbara Hogan, ANC stalwart and the widow of the late anti-apartheid stalwart Ahmed Kathrada said she was deeply hurt by President Jacob Zuma’s decision to fire ministers immediately after the funeral of her husband, adding that the president had “gone rogue”.
Zuma defied his own party, the African National Congress (ANC) and went ahead to remove finance minister Pravin Gordhan, she said.
“This means the president is not applying his mind on decision making about one of the most critical issues in our country…the decision about team of people to lead our country, that is an indictment of the president when his own is rejecting him…his own party rejects what he has done,” Hogan told reporters in Johannesburg.

ZUMA AN INSOMNIAC???

President Jacob Zuma has gone and done it.
Like a 90s Chuck Norris movie, the president of our beloved South Africa has gone and taken his last stand.
We are always told that it is the president's prerogative to hire and fire ministers at a whim, but every time it happens, we are left with gaping mouths and a bad case of PTSD.
And we never get used to it.
Because deep down inside, where hope still lives, we think he would not do this to us. Not again.
Not after the dramatic four days in December 2015 when then Finance Minister Nhlanhla Nene was dropped and replaced with the oh so wonderful Des Van Rooyen.
And yet Zuma dared, so spectacularly in one of his middle of the night announcements, that had the country on guard.
He chopped, changed, stirred and mixed his Cabinet at midnight.
And he probably went right to sleep while the rest of us did maths that did not add up trying to come up with valid reasons for this upset.
These esteemed ministers went from attending a Cabinet meeting on Wednesday, probably passionately briefing about their various portfolios, to standing on the side of the road with their office knick knacks all boxed up.
All this without so much as a Dear John letter for some of them.
Because we live in a country where it is okay for ministers to find out with the rest of the country that they no longer have a job.
Apparently ministers don’t deserve the courtesy of even a Donald Trump “you’re fired” in this democratic South Africa.
The president has showed the country who is boss, and this is just the beginning.
With two years left of his presidency, these late nights guarding the country might just become a norm.
And we must just get used to it.
So come on baba, reshuffle us, we are your Cabinet. We are your deck of cards Gedleyihlekisa, shuffle us well.
Chop us, dear Msholozi, we are your soggy vegetables.
Marinate us, spice us, Babes We reshuffle, we are your lamb chops.
Abuse us, baba ka Duduzane, we are your voters.
And our memories are long.
This time political sentiment, the narrative of “Mandela’s ANC”, might not be enough to keep the average voter from straying away from the ruling party.
The road to 2019 starts now. In fact, it started at 12.15 am when the presidency gave us the list of his new ministers and in the process fired Pravin Gordhan, Mcebisi Jonas and other ministers.

RAMAPOSA SPEAKS OUT

ANC and government leaders past, present and outgoing voiced their condemnation of President Jacob Zuma’s firing of Pravin Gordhan on Friday, with Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa rubbishing the reasons the president advanced for his decision.
Speaking to reporters in Bloemfontein, Ramaphosa confirmed that Zuma had presented the ANC’s top leaders with a list of new Cabinet appointments as a fait accompli, going against the party’s tradition of acting after consultation.
“It was just a process of informing us of his decision, it was not a consultation because he [Zuma] came with a ready made list,” Ramaphosa said.
“I raised my concerns and objection on the removal of the minister of finance … largely because he was being removed based on an intelligence report that I believe had unsubstantiated allegations about the minister and his deputy.”
He confirmed that the document, described as “shoddy” by the SA Communist Party (SACP), claimed Gordhan and his deputy Mcebisi Jonas, who was also fired in the reshuffle, were trying to mobilise financial markets against the South African government.
“I found totally unacceptable that such a person who served the country with such distinction would do something like that.
Earlier, African National Congress secretary general Gwede Mantashe, in an unprecedented concession, said the ANC’s top six had been unable to stop Zuma.
Mantashe told a radio station that the reshuffle made him “uncomfortable”, and that he did not know where the new Cabinet was formulated or by whom, a possible reference to Jonas’s revelation a year ago that the Gupta family meddled in ministerial appointments.

REASONS FOR THE DISMISSAL OF PRAVIN GORDHAN

In my personal opinion these reasons are unfair and ridiculous!!! And to be replaced by the former Home Affairs minister is beyond words. What is this beautiful country coming to?

LOCAL ATTORNEYS HELP COUPLE'S R300 0000 BILL

A SENIOR couple had a hefty weight taken off their shoulders and they can finally breathe a little easier knowing that their R300 000 shock Metro bill has been amended.
“We would like to thank the Highway Mail for publishing the article on 13 January regarding our ‘overdue’ electricity account of R356 648.86.
“This resulted in Andrew Leaker and his staff at Morris Fuller Anderson Attorneys stepping forward and offering their services pro bono to try and resolve the issue of our exorbitant account. We are now happy to report that we have received an adjusted account showing a reversal of the ‘overdue amount’.”
It is wonderful to know that there are still good Samaritans, as without their input, I am sure we would still be trying to access a contact at the eThekwini Municipality – they really went the extra mile.

DURBAN FIRE ONGOING AND BUSINESS'S EVACUATED

SEVERAL businesses on South Coast Road have been evacuated as firefighters continue to fight the raging blaze. A noxious cloud of black smoke continues to billow from the warehouse. The warehouse is believed to contain wax panels and other chemicals.

Emergency response teams are working on stabilising the situation. Should the smoke come down to street level due to the wind, the public is advised to stay indoors in order to limit their exposure to the smoke. Pedestrians can make use of a damp cloth to cover their nose and mouth.
“Motorists are requested to be vigilant, keep a safe driving distance and switch your headlights on while on the road.
