KZN MOVING FORWARD IN ERADICATING POVERTY

A R200 million poverty eradication and food security programme was launched in rural Nquthu, northern KwaZulu-Natal on Friday.
Operation Laludlile as it's called, is billed as radical agricultural development for the poor.
Livestock and land is a major source of livelihood for rural people. But over the years things have changed.
More people have moved to urban areas seeking employment and a different life. Now with the high rate of unemployment and poverty, the KwaZulu-Natal government is reviving subsistence farming.
Seeds, fertiliser, fruit trees and water will be provided to those wanting to grow crops. Goats and chicken will be given to those interested in breeding livestock.
KwaZulu-Natal Premier Willies Mchunu says: "A programme of this nature is targeting people’s lives which are at stake people who today may not have food to put on the table."
Operation Laludlile is also aimed at encouraging the youth to study agriculture. Government will also assist communities find markets for their products.
